I’m not paying youthe plot of the movie
Fernando Quagliuolo (Castellitto) inherited a lottery bank from his father Saverio (Antonio Casagrande). His dream is to break the bank with a major win. The chase towards the right numbers becomes an obsession and in fact he spends his nights looking for the right signals. Keeping him company is Aglietiello (Giovanni Ludeno), with whom he studies the composition and movements of clouds, in the hope of receiving the right numbers to play.
After a long wait finally the day of winning arrives. the recipient, however, is Mario Bertolini (Gianluca Di Gennaro), one of his employees and future son-in-law. Mario, in fact, is engaged to his daughter Stella (Pina Turco). Bertolini shows up at Quagliuolo’s house with dessert and a bottle of sparkling wine. «I won!», he immediately says to Stella and Donna Concetta (Maria Pia Calzone), his future mother-in-law. Initially the latter’s reaction is not the most exciting. «And you know what news! He always wins,” she replies. Immediately afterwards, however, Mario goes into detail.
«No, no, no. A lot. I couldn’t think of it, but it’s true. There is no doubt. Here’s the ticket. these are the numbers.” She hands it to Stella and as she does so she exclaims: «Don Ferdina’, last night I dreamed of your father». This sentence is enough to capture Quagliuolo’s attention, who joins the three in the living room. “How handsome he was, with his short-sleeved shirt like when he was reading the newspaper outside the lottery counter,” he says. «He was with Ciccio the tobacconist, they came to my bedroom».
Ferdinando Quagliuolo’s diabolical plan
He continues by saying that the deceased Don Xavier – after calling him «piccerì» – he suggested he bet 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the wheel of Naples. An unusual combination, which made him win 5 million lire. Ferdinand suffered a strange reaction. He has been chasing winning numbers all his life and, in the end, it is his future son-in-law who benefits. He can’t accept it. He therefore he takes note of every word of the story and he puts together a bizarre theory according to which the money belongs to him and not to Bertolini. The reason can be traced back to the place where he lives.
Mario lives in the house where Ferdinando lived. Therefore, not being aware of the son’s move, Don Saverio’s spirit went to visit him in the bedroom. The fact that he called him supports this hypothesis piccerì, just like he did with his son. For Quagliuolo a real battle begins in the name of his truth. He takes possession of the ticket and does everything he can to get the winnings as well. He asks for the opinion of a lawyer, Lorenzo Strumillo (Giovanni Esposito), who first suggests that he withdraw the winnings. Then, when the truth emerges, he backs down.
Ferdinand does not give up and continues, but is opposed by his wife and daughter, certain that the winnings go to Mario since he played the ticket with his own money. Furthermore, Bertolini says he is willing to give him a percentage, equal to 100,000 lire. It’s not enough, because Quagliolo is consumed by envy and can’t believe that his father appeared to Mario in a dream and not to him.

And this makes it universal”, explains Castellitto a RaiNews24. “It’s like a wonderful, extraordinary human zoo where [i personaggi] they move inside this cage which was the stage and which was in some way that universe of the universe in which Eduardo moved and tells us about ourselves.” In his comedies there are «envy of youth and envy of someone else’s fortune»he concludes.
In a backstage clip available on RaiPlay, the director explains what excites him about De Filippo. «This continuous interpenetration between the dream and the real and the definitive affirmation that there can be no dichotomy between reality and fantasy», he says. «Reality itself is embedded with incontrovertibly magical elements. Reality is magical and therefore when we represent reality, as in I’m not paying youwe represent it so permeated with magic that this difference has no sense of existing.”
