45 nomenclature experts participated in the selection of the winner of the Name of the Year competition.
The name of 2023 has been chosen as Käärijä – an artist who rose to phenomenal popularity with May’s Eurovision.
The name of the year was chosen during the Nomenclature Research Days on November 10, in which 45 experts in nomenclature research, maintenance and planning participated.
The language experts justify their decision in the announcement of the University of Helging. Experts say that they were particularly pleased with Käärijä’s success that both the artist’s name and the representative song are in Finnish.
– In modern Finland, it is often thought that internationality in different areas of life requires the use of the English language or at least the avoidance of “slang”. The wrapper has said that the artist name was born spontaneously while he was “wrapping” winnings from the slot machine, the release reads.
