Huskies that injured and killed alpacas are allowed to return to their owners

The two huskies that bit an alpaca to death and seriously injured three others in Eemnes last Monday will return to their owners this week. This is reported by the Public Prosecution Service (OM).

The owners and employees of the alpaca farm were stunned after they were told by police on Saturday that the huskies were returning to their owners, they told RTV-Utrecht.

Francis Kallenbach, who works at the alpaca farm, told RTV-Utrecht: “The only thing they told us is that the dogs will return, but the exact day is still unclear. We are really surprised.” No judicial measures appear to have been taken, according to Kallenbach.

Muzzle

The Public Prosecution Service has made the decision about the return of the dogs. “This always concerns customization, but there are guidelines,” says a spokesperson. “After a first biting incident, there will in principle be no criminal action. The dog almost always remains with its owner. That is also the case in this case. The dogs will therefore be returned to the owner.”

However, a biting incident is registered by the police and the owner will discuss how a biting incident can be prevented in the future. In a response to RTV Utrecht, the municipality of Eemnes announced that it intends to impose a leash and muzzle order. But that won’t be possible for another two weeks at the earliest.
