The European part of Russia today will be covered by a storm, weather forecasters warn. The elements have already dealt a blow to the Kaliningrad region. Who is next?
The cyclone occupies a huge area, its frontal system is widely spread. Windy today will be in the south, and in the central regions, and in the north-west of the country.
The day before, Ilenia unleashed all its might on the countries of the Old World: houses are destroyed, trees are broken, there are dead, tens of thousands of people were left without electricity. Poland and Germany were at the epicenter of the hurricane. At some weather stations, the wind speed on February 17 exceeded 40 meters per second.
Now “Ilenia” has already crossed the border of Russia. The western regions of our country felt the influence of the cyclone. The storm was noted in the Kaliningrad region, and in St. Petersburg it was necessary to block the shutters of the protective dam in the Gulf of Finland. It is expected that due to strong winds, the level of the Neva may rise to 170 cm – this is above the “flood” mark.
Now the center of cyclone “Ilenia” is located over Karelia, but the system of its atmospheric fronts spreads to the east and south. The warm front crosses the Arkhangelsk region and the Komi Republic. A cold front crosses the Russian Plain from north to south. The cyclone cannot move strictly to the east, since the path is blocked by a vast anticyclone. Overcoming resistance, the Ilenia will slowly move to the northeast.
In the zone of maximum gradients – at the junction of a cyclone and an anticyclone – the wind will accelerate the most. In places in Pomorye, the Vologda and Kirov regions, gusts of over 25 meters per second are possible. From the Arkhangelsk region to the Black Sea region, the wind speed during gusts can exceed 15-20 meters per second.
The main precipitation zone is located in the western half of the European territory of Russia – this is well illustrated by weather radar data. Dense clouds over the Leningrad region, over the Central region, over the Chernozem region and in the west of the Southern Federal District.
What will happen next? From the south, bad weather will be forced out by a zone of high pressure. Cyclones will remain in the north. As soon as Ilenia shifts to the northeast, a new vortex, also very active, will take its place. Europe is already closely and cautiously watching its approach. He also received his own name “Eunice”, and only powerful whirlwinds are honored with this. The UK is already preparing for its invasion: a red weather alert has been declared – this is an extremely rare event. It is expected that a new storm on the islands may be the strongest in the last 30 years! Forecasters warn of wind intensification up to 44 meters per second.
As for the current situation, in St. Petersburg today plus 1 degree, precipitation, western wind up to 15 meters per second. Near zero at night, the evening will change direction to the southwest and slow down a little. Tomorrow afternoon is expected plus 2 degrees, rain, moderate wind – 8 meters per second. On Sunday afternoon, near zero, snow with rain, the wind will again change direction to the west and increase to 12 meters per second.
Strong winds are not expected in Moscow today, and the temperature will rise during the day up to April plus 4 degrees. It will rain, and closer to the night the precipitation will turn into snow. Tomorrow, a new wave of bad weather will cover the capital: it will become a couple of degrees cooler, and the wind will increase again – up to 12-15 meters per second. It will rain during the day, and by the evening the precipitation will turn into a mixed phase.
