Houses were washed away and the damage is enormous. Over land in Florida, Ian lost momentum and raged on like a tropical storm. Over the Atlantic, however, it has regained strength and has now entered South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane.
According to the US National Hurricane Center, the hurricane near Georgetown will reach winds of up to 97 kilometers per hour. North of Charleston, the state’s largest city, the wind speed is around 140 kilometers per hour.
Ian is also feared to cause life-threatening storm surges and flooding in South and North Carolina and Georgia. Officials in the three states have warned residents to prepare for dangerous conditions.
