The Municipality of Aa en Hunze has reserved nine tons in the new budget for a cycle path from Spijkerboor to Eexterveen along the Hunze River. The Hunze Steering Group is positive, according to the alderman.
That is quite a turnaround, because at the beginning of this year the plan was almost canceled. The purchase of land along the Dorpsstraat and Hunzeweg failed. As a last resort, the mayor and aldermen tried to investigate whether the bicycle path could also be built along the river Hunze (or Oostermoersche Vaart) – a little further on.
History
The cycle path is necessary because in 2016 three schools in the municipality of Aa and Hunze merged in De Triangel in Eexterveen. Pupils had to cycle along the dangerous highway to get to the new primary school. The municipality promised to investigate the construction of a bicycle path between Spijkerboor and Eexterveen. However, the file remained on the shelf for a long time.
Alderman Ivo Berghuis announced during a council meeting on Thursday evening that the Hunze Steering Committee is ‘positive’ towards this Hunze route. “The conversation has been good.” The municipality is now in talks with the Hunze en Aa’s water board.
