On Monday, the Hunze en Aa’s water board will build a small emergency dike along the Drentsche Aa near Glimmermade.
The board there is busy with work on the quay. Due to the large amount of rainwater that has flowed through the stream in the past 24 hours and the high water level, it is necessary to reinforce the broken banks with sandbags. The emergency dike is being built in a rural area, so there is no danger to local residents, according to a spokesperson for the board.
Soil saturated
An exceptional amount of rain has fallen in the Hunze and Aa’s area, the shelf says. Such a large amount of rain in 24 hours only occurs once every twenty years. The soil is already completely saturated with water, so the rain does not sink into the ground. It is also difficult for the shelf to discharge into the sea, because the water in the Ems is pushed inland by the strong wind. An extra pumping station has been called in, but the shelf still expects a rise in the water level and more flooding in the next 24 hours.
Locks closed
The locks in the Pekelder Hoofddiep, the Kieldiep and the Borgercompagniesterdiep are closed to prevent flooding. Water in gardens and crawl spaces will not subside until the shelf can drain excess water later this week.
