The municipality of Maastricht will receive 400 Ukrainians in the former Overmaze prison.
Alderman Anita Bastiaans writes this to the municipal council of the provincial capital.
Assylum
The first refugees from the Ukraine should settle there around 1 May. The municipality has already received Syrian refugees there, but homeless people were also given shelter during the corona crisis.

The MECC Hall Center is currently also accommodating up to 400 refugees from Ukraine. They are registered there and stay there for a few days before being taken to another place where they can stay longer. In Overmaze, the refugees, especially women and children, can be housed for a longer period of time.
Agreement
The municipality has reached an agreement with the Government Buildings Agency about housing for Ukrainians. In the coming weeks, the building will be furnished to accommodate people.
“I also hope, together with you and the Ukrainian refugees, that this terrible situation will soon come to an end and that the reception will therefore be of limited duration,” said the alderman in a letter to local residents.
