Hundreds of runners will run the Venloop this weekend. And if we are to believe the weather forecasts, it will be quite warm.
Employees of the VieCuri hospital in Venlo provide medical support for the runners. They are already fully prepared, as it might be thirty degrees on Sunday. And then overheating or dehydration quickly looms.
First aid
“Of course we have our emergency room that is open, and behind the finish at the Venloop we have a second emergency room, where we can admit ten to fifteen patients,” says medical leader Nathalie Peters of the VieCuri hospital in the L1 Nieuwsshow. .
“We also thought about what extra equipment we need: so that we can administer extra moisture. What is also very important in case of overheating is the rapid cooling,” says Peters.
‘Drink extra water and watch each other’
Participants are advised to drink a lot of extra fluids and not to wear thick clothing. The hospital also hopes that participants will pay close attention to each other. Runners or recreational runners who nevertheless overheat are placed in a cool bath as soon as possible: “We have a bath behind the finish, at about five degrees, where the patients lie. When temperatures of around 40 degrees are measured in participants , you want to get them under 39 as soon as possible.”
The Venloop will take place this week from 11 to 15 May with the running event on Sunday.
