Hundreds of cans on snow-covered roadside: ‘Have to pick everything up by hand’

The snow-covered verge of the N282 between Dorst and Hulten was littered with hundreds of cans on Saturday. The waste flows over a length of several kilometers. “We are picking everything up by hand.”

The police received a number of reports about the cans during the morning. “Because they could possibly also be on the road and cycle path, this could pose a danger,” says Sven van Reusel. According to the province’s road inspector, further inspection shows that it is probably a load in the ‘old iron’ category.

“These are cans without a deposit. Moreover, the tops of all the cans have already been removed. That is why we suspect that it is a truck with scrap iron that has lost part of its load.” The transporter of the cans cannot be traced, says Van Reusel.

The province has hired a contractor to clean the roadside again. The clean-up will take approximately until the evening. “All cans have to be picked up by hand. And that over a very long distance.”
