Mats Hummels’ contract with Borussia Dortmund expires in the summer. It is unclear whether BVB and the players are already negotiating an extension for another year.
It is undisputed that Hummels’ father and advisor Hermann Hummels stayed at the Revierklub office in Dortmund-Brackel for around an hour on Wednesday.
While the club-affiliated “Ruhr Nachrichten” reported that BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl and Papa Hummels had begun negotiations about a possible extension, “Bild” reported in the evening that there had only been a regular exchange about the sporting situation of the 2014 world champion. The contents of the contract were not specifically discussed.
The timetable, confirmed by Mats Hummels himself, remains that the decision about his BVB future will not be made until later in the season. It is also said to have been clearly agreed with Hermann Hummels that his son will receive “any time to think” from BVB.
Hummels has already played 23 competitive games (two goals) under coach Edin Terzic this season and is currently an integral part of BVB’s defense center.
BVB: That’s what Mats Hummels says about his future plans
If things don’t continue for him in Dortmund, there are several options available: Ending his career is conceivable, as is a move to the North American MLS.
Hummels himself also recently publicly flirted with getting involved in the Baller League, a new indoor soccer league founded by him and Lukas Podolski.
“I’m definitely up for it. You can be sure that if I could and were allowed to, I would have gambled. But unfortunately it’s just not possible,” he said on Monday in Cologne.
But he had “already chatted with Podolski about the fact that I definitely want to play when I stop playing football at some point,” added the BVB professional.
