Human Rights Council wants Russia to end forced deportation of Ukrainian children | Abroad

The Ukrainian government accuses Moscow of illegally deporting thousands of children from occupied territories in Ukraine to Russia. Moscow denies any war crimes and insists that the children were brought to safety before the war.

Of the 47 countries on the Human Rights Council, 28 supported the resolution. China and Eritrea voted against. India was among the 17 countries that abstained from voting. The body has no means to force Moscow to carry out its demands.

In its resolution, the Human Rights Council supported the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin in March for the deportations. The council also renewed the mandate of a commission of inquiry that had recently found evidence of Russian crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
