Hikers found human remains on Saturday in a mountain area in Southern California where British actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago. This has been announced by the local authorities.
The body was discovered around 10 a.m. Saturday in the wilderness near Mount Baldy, the San Bernardino sheriff’s office said. The remains were taken to the coroner for identification. There should be more news about the identity of the person in the course of next week.
Sands, an avid hiker and rock climber, was reported missing on January 13 after leaving for a hike on Mount Baldy, east of Los Angeles. The mountain is 3,068 meters high. The region was ravaged by severe storms in winter.
On Friday, his family released their first statement since his disappearance. “We hold Julian in our hearts with fond memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of nature and art, and as an original and collaborative artist,” the family said.
Sands (65) was born in the English town of Otley, not far from Leeds. The actor is best known for his roles in several films, including A Room with a View (1985), Warlock (1989) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995) He is married to the American writer/journalist Evgenia Citkowitz and has three adult children.
On June 17, the authorities organized a search for the man for the eighth time since his disappearance. That was not successful.
