The contrast could hardly be greater. Directly opposite the stately mansions on the Heemraadssingel in Rotterdam, various outdoor sleeping areas emerge during pruning work. “Yesterday, a 21-year-old boy was sleeping here.”
“It looks like a garbage dump,” says a passer-by in Heemraadspark in surprise. A toaster, some torn clothes, empty beer cans, cardboard boxes and human excrement emerge on the floor of the newly trimmed bushes.
“Yesterday we woke up a 21-year-old boy while pruning,” says an employee of the green maintenance. “He was sleeping in the bushes. We were very shocked because he didn’t look like a bum at all. That kid was just really confused.”
