Huge havoc complicates police investigation into Zutphen gas explosion Zutphen

Three men aged 18, 27 and 31 were injured in the heavy gas explosion in an apartment complex in Zutphen. The police made the announcement today. The detectives are now busy finding out what exactly happened in the house on Halvemaanstraat, but fear that the answer to that question will take a while.

Two of the three men are from Zutphen; the 27-year-old man has no permanent residence. It is unknown how serious their injuries are. Two of them were taken to hospital yesterday, one of them by air ambulance.

In the enormous explosion, which took place yesterday afternoon at 4.30 pm and could be heard for miles around, almost the entire rear facade was blown away. Virtually nothing is left of the living studio on the ground floor. On the first floor, the floor of a kitchen has been completely swept away and only the kitchen cabinets are still hanging on the wall.

Shards in the garden

Local residents are – of course – shocked. The shards and debris flew far through the air and ended up with them in their garden or on the terrace. One of them calls it a miracle that the people in the building were able to survive the explosion at all.

Today the forensic team will start investigating the cause. However, the Gelderland police do not expect that this will immediately yield answers. “Given the devastation, the investigation will take quite some time,” a spokesperson said on Twitter.
