Most bastard fines for antisocial driving behavior or nuisance were handed out to Tilburg residents in our province. This is apparent from research by RTL Nieuws. Nationally, the city ranks highest after Amsterdam. Does that also make Tilburgers the biggest bastards? Residents themselves think not, although they often see behavior that is unacceptable. “Everyone does something stupid sometimes.”
“Everyone does something stupid from time to time and the fines you get for that are justified”, a Tilburger responded on Monday. the research of RTL Nieuws. In his city, bastard fines are handed out slightly more often than in the rest of the Netherlands.
This behavior includes fines for noise pollution, overtaking on the right, wrong parking, driving on the sidewalk and other antisocial driving behaviour. 70 per thousand Tilburg residents were handed out 70 asshole fines in 2021. Only in Amsterdam was this more with 75 fines per thousand inhabitants.
“I regularly see bastard behavior, but the fact that Tilburg is in second place surprises me. Wrong parking is done a lot here in the city. Someone then thinks that the loading and unloading place is a nice parking space. I sometimes drive too fast, but I think that’s not too bad,” a woman confesses honestly.
“I would give a lot of people fines for assholes.”
The place in the ranking does not surprise another woman at all. “I often see fights in the street so it doesn’t surprise me. I could give a lot of people fines for bastards,” she laughs.
One Tilburger appears to be more bothered by it than the other. For example, one man says: “A lot is being destroyed in my neighborhood. My colleague’s scooter was recently damaged and glass had been broken from the bus shelter.”
“I think it’s not that bad, but that must be due to the quiet neighborhood where I live. I hear and read a lot about nuisance and antisocial driving,” says another man.
“They drive like crazy here.”
A woman who lives in the Reeshof recognizes that driving behaviour. “They drive like crazy here to be as close to the shops as possible. For example, motorists drive too fast and quickly take a spot when you want to park.”
The municipality of Tilburg suspects that the asshole fines for antisocial driving behavior have to do with two things. For example, a driving ban in Nieuwlandstraat has ensured that the street has become a voucher champion since 1 July 2021. “A lot of fines are handed out here because of the scan cars. The chance of being caught by these cars is 100 percent,” says the spokesperson for the municipality.
Other changes in the city also play a part in this, the municipality believes. “Many unpaid parking spaces have been changed to parking spaces for permit holders. This also resulted in many fines for incorrect parking last year.”
“I’ve forgotten my tricks.”
Some Tilburgers are honest. A man admits, for example, that he himself sometimes exhibited asshole behaviour. “When I was younger, I gave extra gas unnecessarily, but with these gas prices you forget those parts,” he laughs.
