Chinese technology manufacturers Huawei and ZTE have been classified as security risks by the EU Commission. The use of technology offered by manufacturers is abandoned in the EU’s administrative mobile phone networks. The news agency APF reported about it.

– This is possibly too critical a vulnerability and a risk to public safety, the commissioner responsible for the EU’s internal market Thierry Breton told a press conference in Brussels.

Department head of the information and security department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Laura Euro states to Iltalehti that it is the Commission’s proof of an example for the recommendation given three years ago on the use of risk technologies in 5G networks.

– The commission was obviously disappointed with how the recommendation was followed. This action aims only to set an example, says Eiro.

According to Eiro, a broader ban would require legislative measures if the EU were to completely ban the operation of individual companies in its territory.

The Commission is eager to follow suit

Breton recommended the removal of Huawei and ZTE technologies for a total of 27 network operators and member countries.

According to the Commission, a total of 24 member countries have said in their answers that they will give up Huawei and ZTE technologies in their administrations. Breton says that, however, only 10 member countries have finally banned or restricted the use of manufacturers’ technologies.

– This is too little. This poses a security risk to the common security of the Union.

of the Financial Times Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have started an administrative ban in the EU. In addition, Great Britain has joined the ban.

Breakaway

Three years ago, the EU issued a warning about the use of technologies by risky companies, but did not single out Huawei or set more specific bans at that time.

The remarks aim to prevent the emergence of dependencies, and to avoid a situation similar to what happened with energy after Russia attacked Ukraine.

– My main message to the member states is to remind them not to create critical and irreversible vulnerabilities, Breton said.

The decision conforms to recommendations issued by the United States to reduce the use of Chinese technology. The US claims that Huawei’s network technologies pose a security risk. Huawei’s competitors in the 5G technology market have benefited from this. Nokia is one of these.

However, the authorities of various countries have stated that Chinese technology manufacturers have an obligation to help China’s intelligence service if necessary. In Finland, the Protection Police has also pointed out the matter.

– When procuring Chinese information technology, it is essential in the risk assessment to evaluate the requirements for the confidentiality of the information processed by the device, the Protection Police says in its national security review.
