Hamburger SV has to accept the next setback in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga. The other favorites also make mistakes.
Hamburger SV continues to stumble through the 2nd Bundesliga. Interim coach Merlin Polzin’s team couldn’t get past newly promoted SSV Ulm with a 1-1 (0-1) draw and only celebrated one win in the last seven games. It remains to be seen whether Polzin will remain coach in the new year.
Aaron Keller (34th) gave Ulm the lead, Davie Selke (50th) equalized after a goalkeeper error. The guests ended the game outnumbered after a yellow-red card against Daniel Elfadli (69th, repeated foul play).
HSV disappointed across the board in the first half. The favorite couldn’t think of anything offensively, center forward Selke was completely up in the air. Kellerkind Ulm, on the other hand, acted courageously. Maurice Krattenmacher (10th/23rd) and Dennis Chessa (11th) approached the goal, then Keller took the deserved lead at the break.
A gift from the hosts brought HSV back into the game. Ulm’s goalkeeper Christian Ortag undercut a cross from Miro Muheim, and Selke headed into the empty goal. Inspired by the equalizer, the guests stayed in control. Jean-Luc Dompe only hit the inside of the post in front of 17,400 spectators in the sold-out Donaustadion (52nd). Ulm recovered quickly afterwards and had opportunities again. But HSV also pushed for victory with one less player. Selke (84th) only hit the post.
Meanwhile, league leaders SC Paderborn also couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw in Magdeburg. This means that the SCP did not lose important points in the fight for promotion and therefore has to worry about the top of the table as the match day progresses.
Thanks to the draw, Magdeburg is also waiting for its first home win of the season in the eighth game in its own stadium. Philipp Hercher gave coach Christian Titz’s team the lead (57th), shortly afterwards ex-Magdeburg player Raphael Obermair equalized with a penalty kick (69th).
Shortly after kick-off, Magdeburg had to change. Defender Samuel Lorić was replaced by Connor Krempicki after an injury. After the first sampling, a balanced game developed. Paderborn had the most dangerous scene in the first half thanks to Tjark Scheller (22nd). The Magdeburg defense cleared the line.
In the second half, the 20,665 spectators saw Magdeburg come out of the locker room much more lively than before. Hercher rewarded the hosts just ten minutes after the restart. But the lead didn’t last long. Keeper and captain Dominik Reimann caused a penalty. Obermair converted confidently and the game tipped back towards the SCP.
After falling behind, FC Schalke 04 fought for a draw in a thrilling West duel against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Thanks to Moussa Sylla’s equalizing goal in the 72nd minute, coach Kees van Wonderen’s team separated itself 1-1 (0-0) from the Rhinelanders.
Schalke is still in the relegation battle, but confirmed its upward trend in a playful way after the 4-2 win in Paderborn. With 26 points, Fortuna remains in the top group of the 2nd Bundesliga. In front of 61,955 spectators in Gelsenkirchen, Schalke was clearly the better team for a long time, but still had to accept a 0-1 defeat thanks to Dawid Kownacki (62nd).
