FC Schalke 04 scored again on matchday 16 of the 2nd Bundesliga: The Royal Blues drew against Fortuna Düsseldorf in front of their home crowd. Hamburg and Ulm also shared the points. Leaders Paderborn also couldn’t get beyond a draw in Magdeburg on Saturday.
Schalke is still in the relegation battle, but thanks to Moussa Sylla’s equalizer in the 72nd minute, coach Kees van Wonderen’s team drew with Düsseldorf in a thrilling West duel. The Royal Blues playfully confirmed their upward trend after the 4-2 win in Paderborn. Fortuna remains in the top group of the league with 26 points.
In front of 61,955 spectators in Gelsenkirchen, Schalke was clearly the better team for a long time, but still had to accept a 0-1 defeat thanks to Dawid Kownacki (62nd). However, Schalke didn’t give up. Sylla headed in for a well-deserved equalizer. The 25-year-old almost scored the winning goal. A lob from the striker bounced off the crossbar and onto the post – but not into the goal.
HSV only won one of the last seven games
Meanwhile, Hamburger SV has suffered another setback on the way to its planned return to the Bundesliga. The traditional club did not get beyond a 1:1 (0:1) draw with newly promoted SSV Ulm and has only won one of the last seven games in the 2nd Bundesliga.
Aaron Keller (34th) gave the hosts the lead in front of 17,400 spectators in the sold-out Donaustadion. Davie Selke (49th) equalized. After a yellow-red card against Daniel Elfadli (68th), HSV played outnumbered for long periods of the second half.
After a clear foul in the Ulm penalty area, Elfadli was sent off the field by referee Patrick Alt. Both teams missed good opportunities afterwards. HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was there with a very strong save against a deflected shot from Romario Rösch (74th). Selke had the guests’ second hit on the post (84′).
2nd Bundesliga: Leaders Paderborn only 1-1 in Magdeburg
SC Paderborn also couldn’t get past 1-1 (0-0) at 1. FC Magdeburg. The East Westphalians could therefore lose their lead in the table on Saturday. Philipp Hercher (57th) gave FCM, who were weak at home, the lead in front of 20,665 spectators, while former Magdeburg native Raphael Obermair (69th) managed to equalize for Paderborn with a penalty kick.
The Magdeburgers, who had to replace Samuel Loric after just five minutes with a suspected ankle injury, were actually the better team after taking the lead. It was precisely in this phase that Dominik Reimann hit substitute Felix Platte directly in the head as he attempted to clear the ball. Obermair safely converted the following penalty to equalize.
