HS: The wrapper got fired from his day job

In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat, the wrapper talks about the challenges he has faced in his career.

The new music competition was recently won overwhelmingly by a person from Vantaa Jere Pöyhönen, 29, i.e. the Wrapper. However, Pöyhönen’s road to success has not been easy.

In a recent interview with Helsingin Sanomat, Pöyhönen talks about the foundations with which he has reached this point. One of the turning points happened in 2014, when Pöyhönen’s work in music started to bear fruit.

When gig requests started to come in increasing numbers, the corona pandemic started. With that, all the gigs were cancelled. The only consolation in the situation was his day job as a photographer at a car dealership.

– When the gigs were cancelled, I thought that luckily there is still this dune place. Then the dune place also went under. I wonder what I’m going to do with my life. I lost interest in making music as well, Pöyhönen tells HS.

Although the firings were a tough place, the situation eventually became easier when Pöyhönen’s brother offered him a job as an image processor. Over time, gig bookings also started to appear again.

– I started to make a living again to the extent that I could pay the rent. It wasn’t high life yet, Pöyhönen tells the magazine.

With the UMK victory, the situation is that Pöyhönen can leave his day job and support himself with music. He says that immediately Cha Cha Cha – after the release of the song, Käärijä sold 40 gigs. The matter has made Pöyhönen thoughtful.

– It is important to be able to value these moments enough and not become greedy. Already now I have noticed a little greed in myself. When the gig seller calls to say that a gig at Ruisrock has been sold, I have replied that what about the other gig that has been talked about. We have to put ice in our hat, he tells HS.
