The twelve provinces and the borders with Germany and Belgium. Now we don’t know any better, but they didn’t exist a few centuries ago. The year 1572 – 450 years ago this year – is seen as the beginning of the birth of the Netherlands. Zutphen played an important role in this, although this is often overlooked in the history books.
