How to send photos on WhatsApp in HD quality

WhatsApp is the most popular and most used messenger in the world. For a long time, however, the service had a big problem when it came to sending high-quality photos. WhatsApp has now fixed this with an update and now also has the option of sending pictures in HD quality.

Anyone who uses WhatsApp gets a lot of functions – some useful, some less useful. The messenger also regularly works on new features as well as on improving existing options. With WhatsApp, for example, you can write in bold and italics, search the chats extensively for specific information or links sent, or use a special “holiday mode”. For years, however, WhatsApp users had the problem that pictures sent via Messenger arrived at the recipient in significantly poorer quality. WhatsApp finally fixed that. WhatsApp users can now determine the quality of the photos sent themselves. Now the messenger improves the picture sending with the support of high-resolution formats. TECHBOOK explains how it works and what you should definitely pay attention to.

Send WhatsApp photos in HD quality

It has been known since early June that WhatsApp is planning an HD option for photos. Since then, beta testers have been able to access it. Messenger has now announced that the feature will be rolled out across the board in the coming weeks.

To send photos in HD quality on WhatsApp, proceed as follows:

  • Select the photo you want to send via the relevant WhatsApp chat (click the plus symbol next to the input window and then “Photo and video library”).
  • The “HD” symbol appears in the editing bar above the image; tap it.
  • The menu that opens then offers the options “Standard Quality” and “HD Quality”. Click on the second option mentioned accordingly.

Recipients of a photo in HD quality on WhatsApp are also notified by a corresponding symbol, which can then be seen on the bottom left of the image. According to its own statement, the company is also working on offering the new quality for videos as well. So far, the HD option is limited to photos.

Determine quality when sending WhatsApp photos

However, anyone who sends images in high resolution, but above all also receives them, should note that more storage space is required. The same applies to data volume if you get photos on the go and download them. That’s why you should set in the settings anyway that photos on WhatsApp are only automatically downloaded in the WLAN. To do this, go to the WhatsApp settings and select under “Storage and data” and then “Auto. Download Media” select “Wi-Fi Connection”. If you are particularly interested in an image on the go, you can still download it manually with a simple click.

Incidentally, you can also set the photo upload quality on WhatsApp. This setting affects both the resolution and the image compression.

  • Open WhatsApp settings and select “Storage and data”.
  • At the bottom of the list you will find the item “Media upload quality”. There you can choose between the options “Autom. (recommended)”, “Best quality” and “Save data”.

With the new update to HD quality, the actual resolution of the photos sent via WhatsApp has improved many times over.
