How to find out iPhone age easily

How old is my iPhone? Have you ever asked yourself this question? You can easily find out using the serial number and an online tool. TECHBOOK shows how it’s done.

Would you like to buy a used iPhone or are you simply interested in the age of your Apple smartphone? Then you can find out by the serial number. There are two ways to do this.

Find iPhone serial number

For both ways of determining the iPhone age, you need the so-called serial number. This is mandatory information from the manufacturer so that each product can be identified at any time. They are often used, for example, to check a device’s warranty claim. You can find the serial number of an iPhone in iOS in a few steps. Open the phone’s “Settings” from your home screen or application browser. A little further down in the list that now appears you will see the item “General”. Then tap on “About” in the submenu. In the overview that can then be seen, you will not only find out the serial number, but also other interesting information such as the current software version or the remaining memory space.

1. Find out iPhone age via Apple website

About the website checkcoverage.apple.com you can enter the serial number of your iPhone. Once you have entered the serial number, you can find a picture and the exact model number of your device on the Apple site. Below you will find the point “expected expiry date”. This tells you the end of the warranty period. If you have not purchased a warranty extension, your purchase date is one year before the specified date. Unfortunately, if your iPhone is more than a year old, the Apple website is of no further help.

2. Dutch website gives more detailed information

If you want to learn more about your iPhone, visit the Dutch website Chipmunk. Unfortunately, the website is not available in German, but it is very clear and easy to understand for English speakers. After you have entered the serial number in the form, you can start a query. The page then lists all the information related to storage capacity, processor, display and production. Under “Production week” and “Production year” you can read the production date of your iPhone to the nearest calendar week. TECHBOOK successfully tested the tool with an iPhone 5, 6 and 12. However, there is no guarantee – in particular newer devices may not yet be stored in the database.
