Sympathy for the fate of Ukraine can be felt worldwide. The Russian invasion is perceived by an overwhelming majority for what it is: a monstrous injustice, a breach of international law and a threat to democracy. A number of artists and stars from film and television do not want to stand by and have their say with clear statements.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has on Facebook wrote a detailed statement. There it says:
My thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. I’ve been asked for several interviews, but I believe the news should continue to focus on what’s happening on the ground – the tragedy that broke our hearts and the courage of the Ukrainian people that inspired us. I’m no foreign policy expert, so I’ll leave the analysis to people smarter than me. But I know what it’s like to grow up in an occupied country after a war, and I know that nobody wins in the war and what happens after it. Everyone suffers.
War has a habit of breaking up winners as well as losers. I have Ukrainian friends and fans and I have Russian friends and fans. As far as I can tell, none of them want this. I hope that in the end common sense will prevail and this unnecessary war will end before too many lives are destroyed. In the meantime, I stand by the people of Ukraine. I share your sorrow and your hope for peace. You inspire me with your courage and humanity in the face of this nightmare. God bless you.
Tocotronic appeal for donations
“Never again war” is the message from Tocotronic these days. The band themselves could hardly have imagined that their album title would capture the zeitgeist so precisely. They posted the matching Käthe Kollwitz anti-war poster. “Our hearts and solidarity are with the victims of Russia’s war of aggression. Please support them!” Attached they posted a link to the donation page “Emergency Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine” on Facebook. Almost 100,000 euros have already been received there.
Die Toten Hosen express their condolences
“This war is an attack on international law. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine,” says the Toten Hosen. They also link some places where everyone can support directly.
The Simpsons: The yellow family also raises the Ukrainian flag
Yellow and blue – the Simpsons, or rather the series makers, show solidarity and show with this post that they are supporting Ukraine in this difficult time.
Despite all the slapstick, “The Simpsons” has always been a political series. Again and again they deal with grievances, caricature the high-spirited and clarify with humor, but also targeted seriousness.
