How shaky is the foundation of the Iron?

By Sebastian Karkos

In the middle of the season, we are already looking ahead: How will the Iron Team look from the summer?

Saturday on the edge of the game against Cologne (0-0), Oliver Ruhnert (51) said on “Sky”: “At the moment I can’t say who our newcomers will be.”

The manager continues: “The club has a good foundation for the next few years. We have quite a few players under contract. All but one are under contract.”

According to reports, only the future of Rani Khedira (29) is open among the regular players because his contract ends in the summer. However, its extension would certainly be possible.

And otherwise? The foundation is there – but it’s shaky because there are two sales candidates despite ongoing contracts…

Offensive Sheraldo Becker (28) has been flirting with a change for a long time, Everton and Nottingham are said to have been interested in the winter break. Ruhnert is unimpressed: “If that’s the case, then we should treat him and accept it.” Defender Danilho Doekhi (24) was already approached by AS Roma in January.

Ruhnert announces: “Something will happen again in the squad. We want to take the next step forward again.”

Ruhnert should look for replacements for all positions. How much money is available? It all depends on the particular European competition the Iron Ones qualify for. For example, if the entry fee in the Europa League is 3.6 million euros, 15.6 million are already flowing in the Champions League.

So Union could invest more for the premier class – and thus strengthen the foundation.
