Strong in UV protection, gentle on sensitive skin – and no questionable ingredients: that’s what sensitive sun creams are supposed to do. Most of them can do it, as a test shows.
No perfume or alcohol, but nourishing ingredients: If the skin tends to be irritated, the sunscreen should be particularly gentle. The magazine “Öko-Test” had 21 such sensitive sunscreens tested in the laboratory (issue 6/2023).
With results that delighted the testers. All of the products tested do not contain any questionable UV filters. This was not always the case in past tests.
These are the test winners
A total of three sunscreens came out of the test with an overall very good rating.
The “Alverde Sensitive Sun Milk 30” (dm), the “Lavera Sensitive Sun Lotion 30” (Laverana) and the “Sun D’Or Sun Milk Sensitive 30” (Budni/Edeka/Netto).
With a price of 1.88 euros per 100 milliliters, the latter is also one of the cheapest products in the test field.
Twelve sunscreens performed well in the test. And the rest?
In the case of three products, the testers complained that they contained the preservative called “silver chloride applied to titanium dioxide”.
There is even more in a cream than it is allowed to contain according to the cosmetics regulation – grade: insufficient.
Preservative taboo for small children
It cannot be ruled out that the silver compound accumulates in the body and causes a slate-grey discoloration of the skin.
And: The preservative must not be used in products for children under the age of three. However, according to the testers, it cannot be ruled out that families use sensitive sunscreens for their offspring that may contain the preservative.
According to “Öko-Test”, there should therefore be a warning on the packaging of sensitive sun creams with the preservative stating that children under the age of three are not allowed to use these creams. However, such a note was missing for the affected products.
