The Copa del Rey is one of the most attractive and gives access to two seats for the Super Cup, the most lucrative tournament in national football with prizes of several million euros for its participants. The knockout tournament however, it is by no means a championship that distributes excessive prizes because of a regulation that includes an equitable distribution and also the performance of the teams in the last five years.

We are going to try to explain it in a pedagogical way, although some numbers can dance us because the distribution of the prizes is not made official until the competition ends. Based on the data of the 2020-21 season and with Royal Decree Law 5/2015 in its article 8, we can say that the money that each club receives is established based on the category of the person involved and also by a performance premium.

The mentioned text explains that the 90% of the income from the sale of audiovisual rights goes to professional football (almost 30 million) and the remaining 10% is allocated to the promotion of amateur football and teams from other categories that participate in the Cup (just over three million). The amount allocated to professional football -First and Second Division- is divided with the proportion 90%-10%.

That’s the way it is, the Santander League clubs keep almost 27 million, while those of the Smartbank League share three. Of this amount destined for the greats, 50% will be distributed equally among the 20 teams and the remaining amount is distributed according to their performances in the last five seasons. By participating in the KO tournament, the Santander League teams received 666,801 euros in the last edition.

Now, we are going to break down the bonus by objectives, which is the other 50% of the money -more than 13 million- that the First Clubs take. The phase reached in the last five seasons is taken into consideration and each round has a percentage of 50% that corresponds to the First Division teams and that has not been distributed. Those who reach eighths will enter 2.5%; rooms 6%; semis 9%, the runner-up 16% and the champion 22%.

In this way, the champion, Barcelona, scored 586,785 euros, while the runner-up, Athletic, entered 426,753 euros. To this money should be added the proportional parts for performance of the last four seasons as if the Cup had been played. The Catalans, without a doubt, are the team that will receive the most money from this competition despite falling in the round of 16 by your recent history. In this campaign, Valencia and Rayo Vallecano have caused a surprise by sneaking into the semifinals, securing a prize close to 150,000 euros for it.
