How long will Tegel still be a refugee shelter?

Emergency room at the former Tegel Airport: Berlin's accommodations are overcrowded, the situation is getting worse from day to day

Despite the enormous costs, the Ukraine arrival center in Tegel will remain in place for the time being. The former airport area will be used at least until October, probably until the end of the year.

“We urgently need the 4,300 places, at the moment they are indispensable,” said governing Franziska Giffey (44, SPD) after the last meeting of the red-green-red Senate. Terminal C (formerly Air Berlin) and eight temporary buildings on the runway are currently in use.

The state of Berlin and the federal government pay up to 34.5 million euros a month here – rents to Tegel Projekt GmbH and Messe, but also for operation to the German Red Cross (DRK, 19 million) and one million to the BVG for buses.

Most of the Ukrainians in the 2,664 places currently occupied have been in this emergency accommodation for more than three days – because there are few alternatives. That’s why the Senate is now putting pressure on the districts.

► The list of prefabricated turbo structures that have been planned for years should be processed more quickly. Only 29 so-called modular accommodations (MUF) were built – 18 more remain on a potential list. Often there is resistance from residents or other plans.

Giffey demanded: “We see the responsibility of each individual district – everyone has to make their contribution!” In Marzahn-Hellersdorf there are six locations in operation and in Lichtenberg four, in contrast none in Mitte and two in Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

There is now a clear message against slacker districts: Those who have not realized their two locations (1000 places) since 2018 must provide apartments. Open how that should work with only 0.8 percent vacancy in the city.
