Lewis Hamilton’s contract extension at Mercedes until 2025 has caused positive reactions from several fellow drivers in Formula 1.
“It’s good news for the sport,” said champion Max Verstappen on the sidelines of the Italian Grand Prix (Sunday, 3:00 p.m. / Sky): “Ultimately it’s also good for himself and for Mercedes, because they’re already like that been a team for a long time.”
Red Bull driver Verstappen fought a bitter duel with Hamilton for the world championship in 2021 and literally snatched the title from him in the last lap of the season. If 38-year-old Hamilton wants to win his eighth title and surpass Michael Schumacher, he will probably have to beat Verstappen.
Ex-teammate about Hamilton: “The fire is still there”
It has been the measure of all things since the controversial 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi. The Dutchman is clearly leading the Formula 1 World Championship after 13 races with 339 points, Hamilton is hopelessly behind in fourth with 156 points.
Lando Norris is also looking forward to more duels with his British compatriot Hamilton. “It’s always a pleasure to drive against one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history. I looked up to him when I was a little boy,” said the 23-year-old.
For Hamilton’s longtime Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas on Alfa Romeo, the news was only logical. “Lewis is still enjoying racing,” commented the Finn.
