How cool! Zoetermeer has its own Suske en Wiske comic book

Not every city can say this: Suske and Wiske are having an adventure in our city! In 2004, the municipality published the special comic book to promote the city and reach Zoetermeers’ youth. The well-known cartoon characters visit famous places in the city in the story. The interest in De Razende Rentmeester turned out to be enormous.

The readers of the Haagsche Courant searched for a suitable title for the story. The newspaper’s request resulted in a large number of titles such as ‘Het Zoetwatermeer’, ‘The speaking sprinter’, ‘Het Zoetermeerse Zoethout’ and ‘The clicking wheelie bins’. Ultimately, the title The Razende Rentmeester was chosen.

Raging Steward

The comic book Suske en Wiske by Willy Vandersteen is about a steward who kept the local population under his thumb from Palenstein Castle in Zoetermeer in the sixteenth century. In the story, he escaped in 2004 from a coffin in which he had been locked after an uprising. To get him back in the coffin, a search begins through Zoetermeer via the Stadshart, Snowworld and the Silverdome ice rink.

The stroppy steward

In addition to the adventure, a special short story of 16 pages was made at the time with information about the city of Zoetermeer and placed in the album. In addition to the edition of 20,000 copies, an English version (The stroppy steward) was published in an edition of 2,000 copies.

Second-hand

The new album Suske en Wiske De Razende Rentmeester has not been available for years. You can still find Suske and Wiske’s comic book about Zoetermeer second-hand. You can find a copy on BOL for 33 euros. But perhaps there is a fellow resident who still has the comic book somewhere in the cupboard that you can have for free!
