In the Suzuka race of the Japanese GT500 series, a horrible accident was witnessed on Sunday, which was miraculously survived with just a scare.
The accident happened when three teams tried to make it through Suzuka’s infamous 130R corner at the same time. Kosuke Matsuura and Tsugio Matsuda hit each other and drove into the embankment at breakneck speed. Matsuda’s car took off just before impact.
The car of Matsuda, the Formula Nippon and GT500 series champion of the past years, was completely destroyed in the wild spin. The 43-year-old driver was quickly taken to the hospital, from where comforting news soon spread. The driver had survived the wild situation mostly with a back injury. However, he is being kept under hospital observation just in case.
Matsuura was able to get out of the car by himself.
A picture taken by a viewer of Matsuda’s car shows how completely the Nissan was destroyed in the accident. Fortunately for the driver, the car’s safety frame withstood the impact.
