Credit cards – How much cash can be saved with them?
Various credit cards include fuel discounts that customers can take advantage of. In most cases it is irrelevant which filling station the driver chooses. In general, however, according to a recommendation from “Tanken.de” it can be said that the fuel discounts for all the credit cards compared are so low that it is not worth buying a new credit card just to save on fuel costs. However, if you also use the credit card for other purposes, the tank discount can be profitable, even if the savings are not too lavish – unfortunately.
According to the cardscout credit card comparison, the Santander 1Plus credit card is the most profitable in the overall package. With the card, customers can withdraw cash abroad free of charge and use various bonus systems and discounts – all without paying any contributions. With the Santander 1Plus credit card, a maximum of 48 euros can be saved per year, but in order to reach this maximum rate, customers must show that they have fuel bills of at least 400 euros per month.
According to udongo, this is followed by the Star credit card with an annual fee of 29 euros, but the card is free of charge from a minimum annual turnover of 5,000 euros. There is a three cent discount per liter, regardless of how much you fill up in a year. This credit card can pay off, especially for frequent drivers, in order to save on fuel costs.
cardscout then confirms that the ADAC credit card is the most worthwhile for fuel discounts after the Santander and Star credit cards. ADAC members pay an annual fee of EUR 44 for the card and receive a two percent fuel discount. The card can save you a maximum of EUR 50 per year. However, if you subtract the annual fee, you end up with savings of six euros.
Secure savings with club memberships and bonus cards
Many petrol stations are taking advantage of the rising fuel prices and offering discounts for going to the petrol pump if the person is a club member or has a bonus card. These club memberships or bonus cards are offered by various petrol station operators, including Shell, AralTOTAL or Esso.
For example, anyone who owns an Esso Card TM can save at least three cents per liter of petrol. As a Shell ClubSmart member, the Shell Club price guarantee guarantees that customers always pay for the lowest fuel prices at all branded petrol stations within a ten-kilometer radius. To do this, Shell compares the fuel prices in the area when the ClubSmart card is presented and, instead of the regular Shell price, calculates a guaranteed price that is a maximum of two cents above the price of the cheapest branded gas station within ten kilometers. With Aral Comfort, the Aral filling station offers a savings option for companies with up to five vehicles. And as a member of the TOTAL Club, customers can collect bonus points when filling up, washing and shopping in the TOTAL Shop, which they can later exchange for prizes.
With these methods, you can increase your savings potential when filling up
Ultimately, however, the savings potential for credit cards, club memberships or petrol station bonus cards is relatively small. If you really want to save more on fuel costs, you should also resort to other means. So it’s worth comparing gas stations, looking at which day of the week and what time the fuel is cheapest, or actually getting on your bike again.
