How “Alien 3” almost derailed David Fincher’s directing career

The first Alien film made Ridley Scott a star in Hollywood and paved the way for Blade Runner and everything that followed in his career. James Cameron was given the continuation of the franchise with Aliens after he proved he could handle a big-budget film with Terminator.

For 1992’s Alien III, the studio handed control over to director David Fincher. He had made music videos for Madonna, Sting, Pala Abdul and many other superstars in the ’80s and it was thought he was finally ready to make a film.

The studio hated the first Fincher version of Alien 3

But the project had major problems with the script from the start and went through several phases during pre-production. The studio began to fear that the inexperienced director would not be able to handle the project. They hated his first cut, insisted on reshoots, and then made a new version without his consent.

The film was still a huge disappointment. Fincher looks back on this period as one of the worst of his career and said it almost made him quit the industry altogether. Luckily, he stayed and gave the world Seven, Fight Club, The Social Network, Gone Girl and many other masterpieces.

In other words, the man knows how to make a film.

Who knows what would have happened if he had been allowed to realize his vision for Alien 3 without interference from the studio.
