ROME – The spectacular assassination attempt on Sicilian investigating magistrate Giovanni Falcone, 30 years ago this week, has revolutionized the Italian mafia and society. A huge hole had been punched in the highway near the Sicilian town of Capaci. Falcone was killed with his wife and some bodyguards after remote-controlled explosives were detonated in drainage pipes under the road. It seemed that the Italian state had lost the battle against the mafia.
