BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The housekeepers in the Bundestag have given the go-ahead for a reinforcement of the federal prosecutor’s office in the prosecution of serious crimes in the Ukraine war. The law enforcement agency is to get two new departments, as the budget committee decided on Friday night. Nine positions are to be created for each department.
A department is to deal with possible war crimes after the Russian attack on Ukraine. “The brutal Russian war of aggression against the Ukraine is against international law and inhumane,” said Green housekeeper Bruno Hnel. “The war crimes of the Russian troops must be solved and those responsible must be held accountable.” The second department will focus on the departure of extremists to the Ukraine, the return of fighters to Germany and crimes against the Russian-born population in Germany.
The householders also approved funds for an information campaign for the office of lay judge. There are currently too few applicants as judges, i.e. honorary judges without legal training. In the past, right-wing and right-wing extremist groups had called on their supporters to apply, said Hnel./tam/DP/ngu
