House uninhabitable after flambéing crème brûlée

A house on the corner of Nieuwstraat and Statiestraat in Meulebeke is temporarily uninhabitable after a heavy kitchen fire broke out on Saturday evening.

A small fire started when the dessert was flambéed. The woman placed the burner in the sink and covered it with a towel to cover the fire. The fire was uncontrollable and the woman went to warn her neighbour. Meanwhile, the fire could spread over the house.

CRISIS RESPONSE

When the fire brigade arrived a few minutes on site, there was already talk of a raging kitchen fire. The fire brigade extinguished through the back and front of the house, so that the fire was quickly under control and did not spread to the rest of the house.

The damage to the house is significant. The kitchen is completely burnt out and there is smoke damage in other areas of the house. The couple was taken care of by the neighbors, but can go to a crisis house from today. It will take several weeks or months before the residents can move back into their own homes.
