It was already known that the “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” will be released on HBO later this year. Now HBO and HBO Max CCO Casey Bloys has spoken in an interview about a release date for the series.
Bloys admitted that the announcement of a release date was delayed because the impact of the corona pandemic on production was difficult to calculate. In the last round of production in particular, a large number of actors and crew members were present on the set. You didn’t know if someone would fail and production would have to be stopped, he said.
“Now that we’ve halted production, I think we’ll talk to our people and figure out what we can do to get a date announced. But I was just trying to make sure we didn’t come up with a date that we then can’t keep because of something that’s out of our control,” he added.
House of the Dragon is a prequel series to the HBO classic Game of Thrones. The series was developed by series author George RR Martin, along with Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. The series is based on Martin’s book “Fire and Blood” and takes place about 200 years before the action in “Game of Thrones”. The new series is about the rise and fall of House Targaryen and the struggle for dominance in Westeros. The lead roles are being taken on by Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Fabien Frankel.
Further spin-offs from the GoT universe are being planned
Bloys also commented on possible other spin-offs in the “GoT” universe. It was announced last March that HBO was working on three other projects, namely “9 Voyages aka Sea Snake”, “Fleet Bottom” and “10000 Ships”.
While Bloys said there is no news worth reporting on the projects yet, some are doing very well. Nevertheless, he made it clear that one could probably not realize all of these ideas. There is also no fixed number of spin-offs planned. “We really just do it based on what inspires us creatively. I also can’t promise we might see anything this year because I really don’t know, it depends on how everything develops,” he added.
All projects are still in a very early stage of development, and no authors have been committed to the series. It’s exciting to be able to try different things without having to commit yourself.
House of the Dragon is due out on HBO later this year. Fans will have to wait for a concrete release date for the time being. A first teaser for the series can already be seen here.
