Hot pink is the current trend color – what’s behind it

From BZ/dpa

Pink is not the same as pink. The color has many nuances, from delicate to bright. Hot pink in particular is considered a trendy fashion color. Apart from that, every tone in everyday clothing is trendy.

Pink is one of the fashionable trend colors – in all nuances, but especially in the bright tones. That’s why we’re talking about “Hot Pink”.

What’s behind it – and how pink can be combined well.

What effect does pink have as a fashion color?

Bold pinks, soft pinks and everything in between can be seen at runways and on trend-conscious fashionistas. This is part of a wave of bright colors in the fashion collections.

They have the potential to lift spirits and put you in a better mood. Dopamine dressing is the name of the concept coined by fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. According to this, rich, bright colors can create positive expectations – and that releases the motivation and happiness hormone dopamine in us.

This spring and summer, pink stands out from the palette of strong, cheerful colors. Incidentally, the color is also increasing in other areas: for example in the furnishings and decorations.

Pantone named the pink tone magenta the “color of the year 2023”. The institute has developed a common color system for the graphics and printing industry and has social developments analyzed by trend scouts every year. What then follows is a wave of advertising: the choice of Pantone is consciously picked up by companies and the distribution of correspondingly colored products increases again.

What makes magenta so special as a fashion color?

The pink tone magenta stands for a new signal of strength, for optimism and joy, according to the Pantone Institute’s explanation for its color choice of the year.

Magenta is therefore brave, fearless and symbolizes newly written history.

Stylist and color consultant Sylvia Ebner uses similar adjectives: magenta is intense, dynamic, but above all self-confident. Combining such a striking color is a challenge for many.

But: “There are also subdued, mild color schemes in this spectrum, so that everyone can find a tone for their wardrobe,” says Ebner.

How are designers implementing the trend?

At the fashion shows of the trend-setting labels and designers you can see many monochrome combinations, i.e. pink from head to toe. And partly on very eccentric robes. If that’s too gaudy and extravagant for you: the companies are also selling the trend with looks that are suitable for everyday use.

This means: You will find a wide range of strong pink tones, often in combination with milder nuances. For example with pink, sometimes red as part of the monochrome combination.

“My tip: Bordeaux with magenta,” says color consultant Sylvia Ebner. “It’s still a bit of a monochrome combination, but the dark Bordeaux brings calmness to the outfit.”

The so-called color blocking is not so popular at the moment – i.e. bright colors with many other bright colors in one outfit. Instead, one or two pieces in a strong tone are worn alongside otherwise understated pieces. They calm the overall combination.

Pink is often associated with female clichés. Is that still valid?

“I’ve said goodbye to the Barbie theme. We are all – regardless of whether we are younger or older – self-confident women who stand in life,” says color consultant Sylvia Ebner. She counts rose and hot pink among her favorite colors and thinks: If you want to wear this color, you should do so with self-confidence. And finally, the following applies especially to the trend tone of the season: “Magenta is strong, dynamic and self-confident,” says Ebner.

What’s more, items of clothing from the classic nightlife and working world can be found in pink. So suit combinations, jumpsuits and trench coats. And mostly they are pieces with clear cuts, without flourishes and ruffles. These are just not little girl dresses.

The strong pink is just too strong for me. Can I tone it down?

In addition to the combination with colors that are otherwise more subtle, the material of the pink garment is also important for the effect. “If it has a silky sheen, the color looks even brighter,” explains Ebner. “Slightly rougher materials such as knitwear appear duller and that reduces the color effect a bit.”

Which of course is always a tip: only use pink in very economical doses: on your belt, on your shoes or even just on your nail polish.
