Hospice Sint Maartenhuis in Winschoten is short on volunteers

The Hospice Sint Maartenhuis Foundation in Winschoten needs extra ‘staff’. She is looking for volunteers, a board member and a coordinator.

After a number of corona years, in which the hospice was partly forced to accommodate fewer guests, more use is being made of the accommodation again. That also means more volunteers are needed.

“The group now consists of about fifty people, but we need at least sixty volunteers,” says chairman Trijnko Pelgrim. “A number of people dropped out for various reasons. We also want to strengthen our board and we also need to appoint a new coordinator. Our current coordinator has been forced to drop out.”

Financial compensation

The Sint Maartenhuis offers accommodation to about 25 guests every year to spend their last phase of their lives. “In the first corona year there were 14, the second corona year 18 and last year 34. We receive a subsidy of 2800 euros per guest from the ministry, regardless of the length of time our guests spend with us. In the first corona year we received financial compensation, as much as 1027 euros,” explains Pelgrim. “But we can still manage it financially, although no strange things should happen.” Due to the corona pandemic, some hospices have gone bankrupt in the Netherlands.
