The semi-finals of the Nations League are coming up for the German women. Coach Horst Hrubesch has now announced his squad. With a few surprises.
The German women’s national team and coach Horst Hrubesch are heading into the last two games of the current Nations League season. Now the national coach has announced the squad and was surprised.
Several established national players are only in the squad when called upon. These include Lina Magull, Lena Lattwein, Nicole Anyomi and Felicitas Rauch.
Endemann is new, Wolter returns
On the other hand, there is also a new face in the squad. Vivien Endemann is there for the first time. The 22-year-old from Wolfsburg has so far only been available on call. After her strong debut season at VfL (five goals so far), she has now made it into the final squad for the first time.
The nomination of Pia-Sophie Wolter can also be seen as a surprise. The 26-year-old is currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt. So far she has only played one international match. That was 2020. Now she’s back.
Elisa Senß from Bayer Leverkusen, who made her debut in the last DFB games, has also made it back into the squad. Coach Hrubesch also relies on some experienced players, such as captain Alexandra Popp, Lena Oberdorf, Giulia Gwinn and goalkeeper Merle Frohms.
The team will face France in the semi-finals of the Nations League on February 23rd. Almost a week later, the final or the game for third place will take place for the DFB team in Seville (Spain) or Heerenveen (Netherlands).
For the German selection, it is about qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Only the two finalists will receive a ticket. France is the third nation from Europe to have already qualified as hosts. So if Germany fails in the semi-finals, France will move into the final and the DFB women will still have a chance at the Olympics in the game for third place.
