It rumbles, hums and whistles – if you didn’t know better, you might think Sonic Youth are back. Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng and Gigi Reece fill their debut, “Versions Of Modern Performance”, so cool with feedback guitars and stubborn song monsters, with no wave, post-punk and noise rock, as if they’ve been doing this for ages – they’re fresh out of high school.
A sensational debut
It’s obviously thanks to Lowenstein’s father’s good taste in music that Horsegirl discovered Sonic Youth. But if you think the trio from Chicago are just a cute girl band making music for their parents, you’d be wrong. Songs like “Anti-Glory”, “Live And Ski” or “Billy” are far too good for that. A sensational debut!
