A horse named Ymke from Nederhorst den Berg has had some hellish days. Last week the mare got stuck in a narrow deep ditch, from which she could not get out herself. The horse lay in the blazing sun for at least seven hours. “She couldn’t even hold up her own head anymore,” says owner Marti Bergman. “I could only cry.”
After more than seven hours, the fire station Nederhorst den Berg was alerted to save the animal. Ymke was taken out of the water with a crane, wearing so-called horse trousers, a kind of harness for horses.
According to Bergkamer, it was still exciting whether her horse would survive this. “The vet said she couldn’t do anything more and had done everything she could do. She wanted to give him a shot. But I said: that’s definitely not going to happen. I wanted to wait and see what would happen.” After a few hours, Ymke still managed to get up.
“I was so afraid of losing her”
According to Bergman, horses cannot lie on their stomachs for long. “If horses lie too long, they break very quickly. Their organs are not made for that. That is why a horse often has to be put to sleep if he or she can no longer get up. I was so afraid of losing her.”
But all in all, it turned out well for Ymke. “After a few days she was running well again. And yesterday she came trotting up herself, so it will be fine,” Bergman said.
