Lucky in an accident during the ring-marking in the Kennemerpark in Alkmaar yesterday: after a harnessed horse had run amok, the carriage with occupants got stuck behind a tree. The horse then rammed into another carriage, but its occupants were also unharmed ‘miraculously’.
That is what board member of the 8 October Association Roy Schoonhoven tells NH Nieuws. “Both carriages have been written off.”
Things go wrong when the driver and his horse are waiting their turn at the Kennemer stronghold around 2 pm. “Maybe it was a wasp, maybe it wasn’t feeling well”, Schoonhoven guesses about the cause of the horse’s unexpected behaviour.
That the horse would have become restless of demonstrators present – a theory that has spread like wildfire through Alkmaar since the accident – is nonsense, according to him.
Run in on another carriage
When the pair gets caught behind a tree, the horse breaks free and trots towards other waiting participants. “The horse was then run into another carriage, but miraculously there was no human or animal suffering.”
Because it was not immediately clear how bad the situation was, the organization ‘immediately called the Red Cross’, says Schoonhoven. The participants and horses involved were then taken to the starting point on the site of waste processor HVC, where they were checked by (veterinary) doctors.
“A woman who was in the carriage of the runaway horse had some problems with her leg, but it turned out to be not too bad at the household waste plant,” says the board member. “She only had a bruise.” The runaway horse was also checked, but it also turned out to be unharmed.
The fact that there was no panic after the accident is thanks to the announcer, Schoonhoven said. “She has managed to keep the peace.” After the accident, the rest of the program was canceled, although prizes were still awarded behind the scenes.
