Track cyclist Yoeri Havik is currently still in Denmark, but tomorrow he will compete at the National Championships. “I will fly back tomorrow morning. Hopefully my flight will not be delayed, otherwise I will not make it to the National Championships. I will ride another 100 kilometer pair race with Julius Johansen in Copenhagen tonight,” says Havik.
Havik will compete at the National Championships on the elimination race and the coupling race with Jan-Willem van Schip. In August he won the world title in that event. “My life has not changed. I still have to go shopping. What has changed is my cycling career. As a world champion you get paid well and you will never be linked to a bad rider.”
Nice victory in Rotterdam
The world title is of course the highlight of Havik’s cycling career. Last week he also won the Six Days of Rotterdam and that victory will also remain in his memory. “To be cheered on as world champion by around 7,000 people who are so close to the track is super cool. Very cool to experience.”
“An Olympic medal is the only thing that can change my cycling career”
Olympic dream
The North Hollander’s honors list is almost complete. All that is missing is an Olympic medal. He hopes to achieve that goal on August 10 during the Paris Olympics. “That will be super difficult. Especially now that we are world champions, we are among the favorites. An Olympic medal is the only thing that can change my cycling career.”
Logically, Yoeri Havik will compete in the pairs race together with Jan-Willem van Schip during the Olympic Games. However, the final choice will be announced by the cycling association on May 1. “It is not black and white, but we just have to be in good condition and then we will drive. Vincent Hoppezak is a good third.”

After the National Championships, the Avenhorn resident will play at the European Championships. This will be held from January 10 to 14 in Apeldoorn. Havik will then compete in the Six Days of Bremen and Berlin. In March he will do an altitude training camp in Colombia and in mid-April he will ride the World Cup in Milton, Canada.
