About 260 homes are to be built on the site of the demolished De Glasbak prison in Zwaag. Together with the Central Government Real Estate Agency, the municipality is now investigating whether the social rental homes can be built more quickly, in order to first offer shelter to Ukrainian refugees and emergency seekers.
Once the plan has been worked out, the proposal will be presented to the municipal executive and the municipal council in the autumn. They must first approve the plan before the shovel can even go into the ground.
The plan is now to build both owner-occupied and rental homes on the site, consisting of different price categories. Something that the local party Fractie Tonnaer prefers to see differently. They advocate the construction of even more social rental and owner-occupied homes on the site, namely about 300. “It is a unique opportunity to provide a home for a large number of low-income people in one go. help,” the party wrote in a letter to the college earlier this year.[} eengrootaantalmensenmeteenlaaginkomenaaneen huistehelpen”schreefdepartijeerderditjaarineenbriefaanhetcollege
Build fast
Since it was announced in 2018 that the prison would close, politicians want housing to be built on the site. They also stayed insist that construction had to be done quickly because of the ‘chronic shortage of housing’. The municipality then announced that it would not make a decision until after 2022, due to fierce competition.
The residents around the prison grounds are already involved in the construction process, according to the municipality. The Central Government Real Estate Agency, the land owner, organized a first residents’ meeting at the end of June. And also after the summer, local residents will be informed again about the situation and what has been done with comments made previously.
