The municipality of Hoorn needs 11 million euros for a new crossing over the tracks at the station. To pay for this, the municipality – again – turns to the government. If he decides to agree, the development of the prestigious construction project can be initiated.
The Hoorn council has submitted the request by letter to outgoing Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Housing) and outgoing State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructure).
The redevelopment of the station area requires a significant investment of 200 to 300 million euros and is already funded by the municipality of Hoorn and partners such as the NS, ProRail and the province of North Holland.
Nevertheless, a large financial gap still needs to be closed. To put the final piece of the puzzle together, the municipality turns to the government. “Due to increases in construction costs and interest rates, a deficit of eleven million euros still remains,” the council writes. The municipality wants to use the amount to enable the construction of a new traverse over the station’s tracks.
New traverse
According to the municipality, the current traverse, another word for crossing, needs to be replaced. “The traverse is currently already cramped in size and cannot accommodate future user flows, both to the platforms and between the city districts.”
With the arrival of 6,000 new homes within walking distance of the station, the investment will be an ‘absolute added value’, the municipality emphasizes. “Not only for the growing number of travelers, but also for the thousands of new residents for whom this traverse also serves as a connection between the new neighborhoods and access to the facilities of the city center of Hoorn.”
