Hoogeveen will investigate options for cycling routes

Hoogeveen will investigate whether there are options for cycle routes in the municipality. These are above-average wide paths that should make fast bicycle travel attractive.

The municipal council is doing this in response to a motion submitted during tonight’s budget discussion. A number of factions argue that greater distances can be covered with the arrival of electric bicycles and speed pedelecs.

There are currently no attractive cycle routes that connect Hoogeveen with, for example, Emmen, Meppel, Coevorden and Beilen. That is why the Christian Union, the PvdA, SP, VVD, Municipal Interests and GroenLinks believe that this should change.

According to the applicants, the current cycle paths are not designed to accommodate the speed differences between regular bicycles and, for example, electric bicycles or speed pedelecs. They also believe that exercise should be encouraged. The parties would rather see people taking the bike than the car. The motion ultimately received support from the entire municipal council.

Councilor Roelof Bisschop (VVD) said he found it a sympathetic motion. The proposal can be implemented. According to him, consultations are being held with several municipalities about where cycle routes could be possible.

“They are still working on the last part of the fast cycle route between Assen and Groningen. After that, Southwest Drenthe will also be discussed,” Bisschop said.
