Hoogeveen wants to build thousands of homes

The municipality of Hoogeveen wants to build a lot of new homes in the coming years. At least, that is apparent from the new housing vision that is ready as a concept. By 2030, about 750 homes are to be added to meet local demand. In addition, another 1450 houses will be added to meet regional needs.

According to Hoogeveen, the demand for housing has increased more than expected. Residents’ call for new housing is being heard, but the municipality also faces other obstacles. For example, the aging population in the area is increasing. Local companies are also increasingly turning to labor migrants for help, which requires adequate housing. The same applies to the growing number of status holders who come to the region.

It doesn’t stop there. The demand for more houses is being reinforced by the rapid economic growth of the Zwolle region. For people who work in that area, it may be interesting to move to Hoogeveen because of the favorable location of public transport and the adjacent highways.

A few years ago, the number of houses that would be built until the end of this decade was a lot lower, namely 1100. So it is now about doubling. Most of the local need is in the city. In the villages there is mainly demand for small-scale housing.

The municipality hopes to first use sites that are now fallow. This concerns plots of land within Hoogeveen or the villages. But that is probably not enough to build all the houses. That is why the municipality will have to look for a new expansion location in the near future.

The aim is to be an affordable residential community. About 65 percent of the new construction will consist of social housing and mid-term rent, the cheap and affordable segment. The concept refers to rental prices of up to 1000 euros. For owner-occupied homes, the amount may not exceed 355,000 euros.

By 2030, Hoogeveen thinks that 21% of households will be 75 years or older. It is expected that some will continue to live at home. To respond to this, the municipality wants to realize single-storey homes, cluster homes and 24-hour care places. The aim is to build those houses near care facilities.

Hoogeveen has even set up an acceleration team to stimulate housing construction. They will try to make housing projects run more smoothly and smoothly.
