The municipality of Hoogeveen is continuing with plans to remove two speed bumps on the Coevorderstraatweg just outside Noordscheschut. Tonight the SGP submitted another proposal to put the plans on hold for the time being. There was no majority for this in the council.
The speed bumps must be removed, otherwise the bus from Hoogeveen to Emmen will no longer drive through Noordscheschut in the future. Local residents do not agree with this, because they fear that road speeds will increase and road safety will therefore deteriorate. Councilor Roelof Bisschop, who is considering the file, calls it a devilish dilemma.
“Because do you choose quality of life or safety,” says Bisschop. “I understand that safety for children and people who have to cross the road is important. But so is the accessibility of Noordscheschut. It is a requirement of the public transport agency to remove the barriers, otherwise they will no longer be able to get through.” the village. That is why we have decided to stick to our decision to remove the barriers.”
There were several residents of Coevorderstraatweg in the room. They clearly showed their displeasure through sighs. Brand van Rijn of the SGP asked the councilor a number of questions. He wondered whether everything had been done to remove the speed bumps and at the same time maintain the bus line.
Recently, local residents received a letter from the contractor informing them that the thresholds will be removed. A surprise for them, because the municipality had not told anything about this. According to the neighborhood, there has been previous consultation about possibly lowering the thresholds, but no final decision has yet been made.
