Hommeles at the VVD: North Holland councilors attack national asylum policy

Local VVD members clash with national politicians about asylum policy. The municipalities do not want to be forced to accommodate asylum seekers. “Municipalities have already indicated several times that the stretch is out and that the cabinet really must get the matter under control itself,” write more than twenty VVD members in a fire letter to the chamber.

“As representatives of the people in North Holland, we are very concerned about the enormous influx and influx of asylum seekers.” This is how the letter to the House of Representatives begins. The local councilors denounce the asylum policy of fellow party member and state secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum).

The local groups do not agree with the national policy and feel compelled to receive asylum seekers in their region. According to them, the municipalities are cracking under the high intake figures. “We notice that the support for receiving even more people is decreasing by the day,” the letter states.

The Noord-Holland councilors have the feeling that they are being saddled with a problem that they have not asked for and cannot discuss in a democratic way. “Deliberations on whether an AZC fits in our territory are up to us, as elected councilors. After all, we represent our residents.” The letter was signed by 24 North Holland VVD members.
